Rifles: Should they be London best or mass-produced? Mike Yardley guides us through the very best rifles on offer
Sako 85
I've hunted with Sako rifles for more than 30 years. The company, now owned by Beretta and twinned with Tikka, makes a rifle that might be considered the equal of the Silver Pigeon shotgun. The model 85 replaced the 75 a while ago and is available in a wide variety of configurations. It retains a strong three-lug bolt, and the gun is now controlled feed of a sort with direct engage of the cartridge rim, and has a detachable box-type magazine which cannot be inadvertently released. It is a fine modern rifle, traditionally styled, and offering integrity of manufacture and quality of finish at a sensible price. There are no fewer than five action lengths available and all sorts of calibres. My recommendation would be a Finnlight stainless model with composite stock in light recoiling 6.5 x 55 or the .30-06 Bavarian (if you are not averse to the "hogsback" stock). Call GMK on 01489 579999.
