Rifles: Should they be London best or mass-produced? Mike Yardley guides us through the very best rifles on offer
Browning X-bolt
This new rifle is made for Browning by BC Miroku. The X-bolt impresses with a 60 degree lift bolt handle, three-lug locking, a detachable rotary magazine and new "Featherlite" trigger set, typically, to break at 3½lb. This is an interesting, well-specified rifle worthy of inclusion not least because of its reasonable cost (from £800). One unusual feature is the cocking indicator on the bolt. When you want to unload the rifle with the safety on, you press the button on top of the bolt-handle which unlocks the bolt and allows you to extract a live round. The safety remains locked. X-bolts should hit the UK soon in a limited range of calibres including .223, .22-250, .243, .270 and .308 and 30-06. All UK guns will be stainless steel with synthetic stocks treated with Dura-Touch coating to improve purchase in all weather conditions. Call BWM Armson 01235 514550.
