Rifles: Should they be London best or mass-produced? Mike Yardley guides us through the very best rifles on offer

Ruger

Bill Ruger started by making a .22 pistol that looked much like a German Luger but fired
.22 rimfire ammunition. The similarity between the names did Ruger no commercial harm. He revolutionised the US firearms industry by developing hi-tech casting pro-cesses and applying them to gun manufacture. The 77 is Ruger's bolt-action rifle design, classic in form but made by very modern means. It is now in its third generation with, among other things, a new three-position safety. I preferred the sliding shotgun-style safety on previous models because I found it less fiddly in use. Nevertheless, this is an excellent gun which is available in all sorts of carbon steel-stainless/wooden-composite options. It is made in a wide range of popular calibres and a few intriguing ones, not least .416 Ruger. It costs from £900. Call Viking Arms of Harrogate on 01423 780810.
