Rifles: Should they be London best or mass-produced? Mike Yardley guides us through the very best rifles on offer

Paul Roberts, one of the most experienced big-game hunters in the world and probably Britain's most experienced rifle-maker (he formerly held the Royal Warrant as chairman of Rigby's), runs WJ Jeffery and J Roberts. Employing much of the team that once worked for Rigby (the name was sold to US investors), he makes both double and bolt rifles at prices competitive for London best. It's a wonderful establishment with guns sold front of house and made in the rear. Paul will build you what you want including doubles in .600, .577, .500, .470 and also the Jeffery proprietary calibres of .475
no 2 and .450-400 3in. He has just finished a magnificent .577 with deeply carved African game scenes. Bolt rifles can be made on Mauser, CZ and RPA and Lawton actions, all with Border Barrels (the choice of many British custom makers, not to mention Delta Force snipers in the USA). Calibres as requested. Costs are from about £5,000 for a stalking rifle, £10,000 for a bolt-action big-game rifle and £30,000 for boxlock doubles. Sidelocks from £45,000.
