Rifles: Should they be London best or mass-produced? Mike Yardley guides us through the very best rifles on offer
Westley Richards
Westley Richards, like Holland & Holland, has enormous in-house expertise. Its staff are detail freaks as well as being artists in metal (what Holland & Holland is to London, Westley Richards is to Birmingham). The company builds sidelock and boxlock double rifles, including detachable-lock boxlock guns. Its doubles have the "Model C" doll's head extension and the distinct hinged Westley top-lever work. It also makes Mauser action-bolt rifles. I have been very impressed with all its recent production. I would go there in particular if I were looking for a good value new double. My choice? A .470 boxlock with fixed locks. Bolt actions from £12,250, boxlock rifles from £29,250 (.470 and .500), sidelocks from £57,500 (all prices quoted exclusive of VAT). Call 0121 333 1900 or visit Westley Richards.
