Rifles: Should they be London best or mass-produced? Mike Yardley guides us through the very best rifles on offer

Holland & Holland

Holland & Holland has been famous for its rifles for more than a century, not to mention cartridges such as the .300 H&H and .375 H&H Magnum. It builds both side-by-side, double and bolt-action of superb, uncompromised quality; the former on Royal sidelock actions and the new Round Action, the latter on original Mauser actions and sometimes Johannsen or Ritterbusch actions (offering left-hand versions). The things that set a Holland & Holland rifle apart are quality of finish, attention to detail and supreme functionality. Much as I would love a Holland & Holland double (and will order one as soon as the Lottery numbers come up), I think a bolt-action .375 would be my one-gun choice as it cuts down on baggage and paperwork (no small deal today) and might shoot just about anything on the planet (with reser-vations as noted). Bolt gun prices start at something over £20,000; Round Action doubles at £47,700 and Royals at about £86,000. Call 020 7499 4411 or visit Holland & Holland.
