More than 30 foxhound packs entered the 120th Peterborough Royal Foxhound Show which took place at the East of England Showground on 16 July.
After intense scrutiny of the doghounds, a good lunch in the President's marquee to mull decisions over, and judging of the bitch hounds, the champions were announced. The Duke of Beauforts enjoyed a clean sweep with the Champion Doghound title going to its Halifax and Champion Bitch Hound awarded to its Bobcat. In the Old English type, Champion Doghound went to Brocklesby Galloway while Champion Bitch Hound was the title taken by Percy Spendthrift.
Harrier, bassets, beagles, bloodhounds, draghounds and terriers were also shown, and inter-hunt and pony club team relays were cheered on by the crowd while anxious mothers peeked through their fingers, barely able to watch.
As the president, Captain Farquar, said, Wherever one goes in the world, hound enthusiasts recognise Peterborough as the pinnacle of perfection on the standard of hound conformation." What's more the day, as billed, was a celebration of hunting.
