Pugs
Many horseboxes have a resident pug, including showing guru Yvonne Mitchell’s. Weekly commuters with London and country homes, including Petronella Dodd and Lady Tollemache, like portable pugs, but they are also a favourite of actresses and models, including Jessica Alba and Kelly Brook.
Corgis
Still quite rare despite Diamond Jubilee fervour. Along with HM The Queen, presenter Chris Evans has one. The United States’ equivalent “palace” dog is the Portuguese water dog.
Whippet
Lurchers Favoured by those who drive a lot, including vets and business people, along with author Jilly Cooper.
Papillon spaniel
The professionals’ dog, to be found in shooting and gundog trainers’ homes (including that of the late Keith Erlandson). This spaniel is small enough to come into the house.
Miniature Dachshunds
Another estate special, even in the United States where they can be found at the Kennedys’ Hyannis Port compound (they were a favourite of JFK’s).
JTT (Just Too Tiny)
Yorkies, Chihuahuas, Mexican hairless, shih tzu, due to the ever-present danger that one of the labradors may mistake it for a snack.
